Fun fact: According to Greek legend there was a famous prostitute who managed to avoid a death sentence by showing the judges her boobs and arguing that it would be a crime against the Gods to destroy something so beautiful.

No, but this is one of my absolute favorite bits of history!
The courtesan named was named Phryne and she was indeed a renowned beauty, and was indeed was put on trial for a capital crime. And yes, the sum of her defense consisted of her stripping in court (helped by her lover/defendant) and asking the jury (all males) if they were prepared to destroy this.
But this is actually a very interesting case of Values Dissonance - the capital crime she was accused of was blasphemy. In Ancient Greek society, exceptional beauty was a sign of favor from the gods, and they took the idea that beauty indicated goodness with great seriousness. They even called their nobles Kaloi k'Agathoi, “the Beautiful and the Good.”
So by showing off her great physical beauty, Phryne was being very clever indeed, her argument essentially being “How could I possibly commit blasphemy if the gods have given me this body?“

*Update 12/22/2016: So after talking with some people who voiced concerns about the lack of Jewish representation in the art work as well as the in the initial text post, I’ve added new additions to the comic. I know that this won’t change the reblogs that have already happen but hopefully people will take the time to look at the original post. (just like the version with silent having two “L’s” will live on forever) I know when talking about representation on this broad of a scale not everyone can be explicitly mentioned. The reason I felt compled to make these alterations is because of the use of the nazi embalm, and the current rise of anti-semitism. I’d like to thank those who took the time to speak to me on this subject. There were conflicting opinions on how best to address this, as there always are, but I hope these revision will be seen as a positive step in acknowledging and combating anti-semitism. Azerbaijani painter and decorative artist Tünzale Memmedzade has transcribed the Quran onto transparent silk pages. Memmedzade, a 33-year-old artist, used 50 meters of transparent black silk, and 1,500 milliliters of gold and silver inks in the project, which has taken three years to complete. (read more)
